Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of MIBW.

I have finally finished my redesign of Ezine Ad Helper. Tell me what you think of it http://ezineadhelper.com  

Yes it is a template. As much as I dabble in web design and I am taking a serious step towards learning graphic design, I know when I am licked. 

Whenever I want to create my own design I see the best templates out there and think to myself, what am I wasting time over. I still have some minor changes to make to it such as my logo which is being redesigned in a swish logo but that won't be ready until next week.


Now I can finish up myibizweekly.com which will include a members area just for subscribers filled with all types of goodies.

I am currently getting the info together for my Publisher's Members Area. This is for the publishers involved in my ad coops.

In all honesty I read JL Scott's article twice just I could fully understand what is going on. I wondered is this something mandatory?

It reminds me of an old but classic Daffy Duck cartoon with Porky Pig.

Porky Pig checks into a hotel run by Daffy. Daffy sends a mouse to Porky's hotel room and when Porky complains, offers to kill the mouse for him for a price.

This goes on and on with various other problems to annoy Porky Pig.

So once I read her article, I said to myself

Oh so it seems the Shining Knight who comes across as a solution is actually the one who created the problem in the first place.

All in the name of Business. Yeah Right. All in the name of Money.

So now we are leery of anyone who has the Big Fix..

Because they are probably the ones who started it.

A product is valuable when you see there is a supply and demand for the product.

But to create your own supply and then turn around and offer a solution for an unnecessary problem. 

I don't get it. At least not in the ethical sense.

They are creating a service which I don't need to offset a product which I don't need as well.


This all sounds like one big Drama.

Making a big deal out of nothing and creating problems where there are none. 


Now of course this is no surprise to me, you can almost laugh about it, just to keep yourself from becoming angry at the way people pretend to do business.

Well, never look a sp^m horse in the mouth huh



All in all a lesson can and will be learned from this situation. 

What is a little problem will always become a huge problem if you don't nip it in the bud.

For everyone who thought people like Laurie Rogers, Bobbette Madonna, and jL Scott were out of their minds for telling us about this growing problem a YEAR ago of sp^m filters and how it will wreck havoc on our newsletters ..

I thank you. It sunk in for me months ago so this wasn't surprising.

But for everyone else, welcome to Business 101.









UPDATE YOUR VIRUS SOFTWARE

In the past five hours alone, five viruses were sent to me. Thank goodness for Grisoft http://grisoft.com  It's free.

Key word here Free and it catches the viruses that many would miss. 

I do not have any programs start up when I boot up my computer except for my antivirus program. Especially for those of you like myself that have DSL or a Cable modem. You are always online therefore more vulnerable to viruses.

Be careful. One click and there goes your information.








GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE

Many times in life, we often forget to say thank you for the little things in life. I notice that we tend to do that online as well.

When is the last time you said thank you to someone for helping you?

Whether they just answered a question or perhaps gave you a link to information you were looking for?

We sometimes feel like Rodney Dangerfield sometimes, getting No Respect and it can really make someone's day to just say thank you for your help





THE PICTURE IS CLEARER IN YEAR TWO

After you have done the "First Business Training Year", your outlook on your business future can look a bit clearer these days.

You start to understand that you need a focus, a niche to target your sales to for better results.

Nothing is better than the repeat customer. Treat them right and they will always be your best friend.

True, the first time around, you are testing a lot of methods to see which works for you. Great! Grab what works and run with it.

Don't knock it until you try it. Remember Marketing and Promotion are two different words and two different methods. Know the difference and you are two steps ahead of the game.


Don't be afraid to start something new. If you don't succeed...

well you know the rest of the words :)

What Are Sp^m Filters Doing To Your Ezine?

Recently I asked some of the publishers in my ad coop to give me their opinion on sp^m filters and how it is affecting their publication. I learned so much just from their answers alone, I knew that I had to share this with you. 

Over the next few issues, you will read these great tips and experiences from these great publishers and how it will help you as a reader and/or as a publisher. Thanks to all the publishers involved in my ad coop for your help.

1. How have you changed your ezine delivery or format due to the growing amount of spam filters out there??

I adjust the content/wordings. Hypy Free ads need editing, and I removed triggering terms such as "disclaimer", "opt-in", "accept credit card", "please click here" , etc. from the ezines, using Sitesell's Spamcheck every time before I send the ezine out, not allowing the score to be more than 9. 

(I send the whole ezine to mailto:spamcheckeLaguna@sitesell.net?subject=TEST  and get the 
analysis beforehand).


2. Has this decreased your readership or ad sales in any way??

Lost some free ad senders because of the strict new rule I put. But that's not important. Ad sales actually improved right after I took better care to shape the wordings of free ads.


3. What format and/or delivery do your readers want to see?

i.e. text only, html only, link to an online ezine, or a
combination of both

I think Small-World people love the html version (because we can put the photos of places or things we are talking about), but to Global eBiz subs I don't think they care. In my opinion, html format is easier to read but it takes more KBs and some people read their emails off line...

Giving readers a choice is a good idea if it does not mean extra work our end.


4. What methods have you taken to stop the filters from blocking your ezine? ( i.e. removing trigger words, changing formats, etc)

Remove trigger words and do the spam-check every time before sending an issue.


5. What do you think is going to happen in 2003 with the ever
growing amount of spam filters?

Spammers find new ways to send sp^m. Publishers suffer and some will give up. Everyone will continue to receive spams in the same degree as before.

Well, I've already done some things just going by the information you sent us, Donesia. I didn't run NN through the filter at the link you provided, but I did pay close attention to the words you told us about. I haven't totally remodeled yet, but I have made some changes. 

For one thing, you won't see the word unsubscribe in my ezine anymore. I now say "If you have to leave, I'm sorry to see you go but instructions are at the end of the issue." 

At the end of the issue, I have "To change your subscriber options, put change in subject area and mailto:cherylcrossan#charter.net " 

I spent weeks, seriously, in between other things, changing all my links for fr^ee ads, paid ads, questions, etc to a simple 'click here" format, to ,make it easier on my subs. Now, I find out this gets kicked by filters, so I'm going to have to change them all back to "mailtos." 


I have a small but very loyal group of subscribers or I would quit this crazy business tomorrow. Every week when I get all the bounced emails from the new subs, I say I'm going to. 

But, there is always one email in there between all of those from one of my real subs who thanks me for the info I sent, or asks me for something. So, I decide to do it another week. 

I really don't know what causes you to get kicked by the filters. I had a problem with web TV one week. I complained to everyone who would listen, and I don't think anyone did. I haven't had any problems with them since, until two weeks ago.

This week, things went fine. I send two issues of my ezine, and I got one part kicked back this week from a mailbox for "unacceptable content" but the other part went through fine. I get real sp^am every day in my inbox. However, I don't want my isp deciding what I get and don't get. 


I'm a big girl and I know where my delete button is. I don't pay them to make my decisions for me. I pay them to keep me online, nothing more. Maybe some people want or need more than that from their ISP, but mine better leave my mail alone.

Why Your Newsletter Isn't Making Any Money
(...and how to fix it!)

While there are hundreds of philosophies on how to make 
money online, one that everyone seems to agree on is this: 
You've Got To Have A Newsletter.

So, everyone goes out and starts one.

Problem is, down the road, it seems that many of these 
newsletters aren't making their owners any money. What 
gives? Is the idea of having your own newsletter just 
another one of those "guru lies" like "make $10,000 your 
first month"? Or is there some other reason why some people 
are making thousands each month from their newsletter while 
others are having trouble justifying the time it takes to 
put it together?

Over the next few weeks, I want to outline just why some 
newsletters never make money and how to fix your newsletter 
so that you can make the big money you hear about so often.

Why isn't it working?

There are several reasons why newsletters don't make money:

1. Too High A Frequency of Publication

How often do you publish? If you're newsletter sends out 
something every day, you are going to have low results. 
Here's why:

Every time you send out a mailer, some people open it and 
read it-even solo ads. But some people unsubscribe, some 
people set up a "filter" to get rid of every further mailing 
from you, some people just automatically delete as soon as 
they see you in the "from" line. Some people cry "SPAM".

The more often you mail, the higher percentage of people 
stop looking at your offers.

2. Too Low a Frequency of Publication

If you only publish "once in a blue moon" or on some 
irregular schedule, people are not looking forward to your 
publication. While this is better than #1, it still hurts 
the open rate for your newsletter. People don't recognize 
you so they delete. Even worse, they may forget subscribing 
and report you to their local SHC (Spam Harassment Committee). 
Ugh!

3. Poor Content

The most profitable newsletters provide high quality content 
every time they publish. If you are just throwing something 
together, no one will read your newsletter.

4. Poor "From" and "Subject" Lines

Goal number one: Get the Subscribers to OPEN the newsletter. 
Before anything else can happen, they have to open the thing. 
According to a number of studies, the FROM line is the most 
important factor in determining whether an email gets opened 
or not. The second most important factor is the subject 
line.

Remember: It's not how many you mail, it's how many that get 
read. That's where the money is.

5. "Old Aged" Subscribers

No, I'm not talking here about senior citizens. "Old" 
subscribers refer to subscribers that have been subscribed 
for a long period of time. One of the reasons that the "big 
lists" have such low response rates is that to build a big 
list takes time. The older the average subscriber is, the 
less responsive the list will be. Here's why:

(1) New subscribers almost always read the first couple 
issues of a newsletter, but over time they read them less 
and less often.
(2) When someone wants to stop reading your newsletter some 
people will unsubscribe. But just as many people will 
simply filter out your email address with their email 
program. What this means is that over time you are losing 
twice as many readers as you might think you are.

If you are losing 100 subscribers per week through 
unsubscribes, you are also losing 100 or more subscribers 
through filtering-which you will never hear about.

Next week we are going to see how selling ads might 
guarantee you will never make much money.
