The big buzz on the Internet is all about social media, especially with the social media giant Facebook and now Google entering the field with Google Plus. So what exactly is social media?

The best way to understand social media is to understand the difference between social media and industrial media. Industrial media consists of elements such as television, magazines and newspapers, books, and internet websites that have fixed content that does not change. These forms of media are considered to be permanent because once they are produced, it becomes impossible to change them. Here is one of the main things that set social media apart. Social media can be edited and changed by the very people who use it.

Industrial media are generally produced from a single centralized location and disseminated in an ever expanding circle. Social media is produced in many different locations and collected into centralized points where it can be accessed by anyone with access to the internet.

It usually requires some specialized skills and training to be able to produce industrial media. This typically requires the combined efforts of several individuals, each with their own unique skill set that contributes to the whole.
Social media, on the other hand, is created by virtually anyone and does not require any particularly specialized skills. Anyone who wishes to create content may do so with the skills and tools at their disposal with only minor, if any, modifications.

Perhaps the largest, and most important, difference between the two types of media is the immediacy of social media. Industrial media is produced and disseminated with a lag of hours, weeks, months, or even years between the beginning of production and it reaching the public. Social media, on the other hand, is produced and disseminated into the reach of the public immediately. As soon as the content is generated, it is available to anyone interested in receiving it.

Through the creation of several different social media sites on the internet, it has become possible for users to create their own social networks that can be separated by thousands of miles while being able to converse in real time. Individuals can publish information for those in their network to see or hear and receive feedback immediately through comments and other communication.

Many businesses try to use social media to attract new customers. One problem they face is that people in social networks are usually repulsed by overt advertising. It, therefore, becomes the job of these businesses to establish themselves as experts in their field by producing content that is useful and interesting to users. They must raise awareness of themselves and their products without using any sort of sales pitch to get their message across.

Social media has introduced a whole new way for people to interact over great distances. It has become the preferred source for information and entertainment in many different ways.

Social media is a way for people to share information from numerous sources. One of the real advantages to using social media to disseminate information, is it is shared in real time, meaning that when you share it, people can read it immediately. Social media sites facilitate this by giving users the platform to share information and connect with many people. Users can share this information through posts, articles, news stories, videos and more.

FaceBook is another such site. Here, users can create online profiles, upload photos, and share information with friends all around the world. Users can even make friends with people located all the way around the world and share information with them through their friend pages.

Twitter is also considered a social media site. On this site, users are asked the question, “What are you doing right now?” They may answer in any fashion they wish, though responses are limited to only 140 characters, including spaces. Other individuals may choose follow a person on Twitter and be able to view any of that person’s posts, called “Tweets.”
Flickr is a social site that allows individuals to upload photos and share them with other users.

In addition to the examples mentioned, the internet contains thousands of forums where people with similar hobbies, jobs, tastes, and other traits can visit and post discussions of these interests. Other users have the option of making a direct reply or posting a comment on the post and sharing this other readers as well.

Users also have the option of creating Blogs, user generated sites where an individual can compose and write his/her own content about any subject. The content of these entries immediately becomes searchable on the internet and can be viewed by anyone with access and an interest in the topic of the content.

Social media sites were created for the use of individual users who wished to share information. More and more businesses are finding that these sites are useful tools for them to use in raising product awareness. They can use these sites to generate trust in their opinions and expertise. However, directly trying to push a person to buy a particular item does not work on these sites and could get a business banned from access. Consumers are usually repelled by such overt advertising techniques.

The most important thing one needs to know about social media sites is that 100 percent of the content is generated by users of the site. This content is fluid in that it can be edited or changed at any time by anyone. These sites allow individuals to reach a worldwide audience and to interact with others located anywhere in the world, often in real time conversations.

What better way to produce and display content than through a video. There are numerous video sharing sites that allow you to do this. People can create their videos, upload them to video sharing sites and share them with anyone on social networking sites. Videos can go viral, as users have the ability to rate the videos and embed or share them on their own sites.

Some of the more popular video sharing sites are YouTube, DailyMotion, iFilm, Break, etc. Videos can be produced using any camcorder that stores the videos digitally and uploaded to the site with ease.

Individuals often produce videos and upload them to these sites, then embed them into their own websites. Common uses include the production of how to videos that are used in conjunction with written instructions to demonstrate the process of building something or performing certain functions.

Another fact about these sites is that they are becoming common sources of news and information. The content is generated and uploaded by users, but many videos are reports on current events and weather. For many people, this is how they find most of the news they consume each day.

Videos sharing sites for social networking also allow for the promotion of specific businesses. Owners may produce and upload videos that contain personal introductions and virtual tours of the business to help familiarize potential clients with the products and/or services being offered. The key here is to keep the message personal and allow users to comment on the videos so that problem areas can be redone or edited to make the content friendlier.

Many users of these sites add links to their own websites or blogs to the video content they upload for publication. In this way, they are able to promote their business without necessarily producing a direct advertisement. They can post videos that relate to their business in any way and put in the link to their site as an option that viewers can use to obtain more information.

Some businesses use these sites to disseminate videos that show a demonstration of the product they are attempting to promote. This is an idea taken directly from television advertising. However, the video sharing site allows the message to reach a targeted audience, who then are able to pass it along to members of their own social networks, making the message viral by nature.

Homemade videos can be an invaluable part of the whole social networking experience. They are also a cost effective method of promoting a business without the incredible cost of air time on television. They can be educational, entertaining, or a combination of the two.

Videos sharing sites for social networking have proven their value over and over. This is why Google was willing to pay more that 1 million USD to purchase YouTube. Each day, more users log on to view the latest productions or to see videos that pertain to their own particular areas of interest. This makes it possible for businesses to get their message out to a worldwide audience.

I’m sure most of you have heard of Twitter by now. It is a social network that helps people connect and keep in touch by sharing information in the form of Tweets, or little bits of information at a time. You are limited to just 140 characters per Tweet to tell people what you’re doing or share some information you’d like them to know about.

Like most social networks, it is used and was created for individuals to connect, but businesses have also jumped on the bandwagon to get information out about their products and services. This is accomplished by posting tweets that contain information that followers will find interesting. In addition, they are able to include links to their websites or blogs in their tweets that can be followed to direct traffic to their sites.

The key to using Twitter to help your business lies in making sure that the information posted in the tweets is interesting and engaging. The goal is to attract followers who will see each and every post they make. If the post is interesting enough, followers will be likely to retweet the message to their followers. This extends the reach of the message greatly.

One advantage to using social media in this fashion is that it provides a source of free advertising. The message reaches a potential audience much larger than could be achieved with local or television advertising and the cost is negligible.
Once a following is built up, the number of people who click through to a business’s website or blog increases exponentially. This gives the advantage that these people are already interested in what the business has to offer, making them that much more likely to purchase whatever product or service is being offered. This makes the ROI for using Twitter go very high when compared with other forms of advertising.

All forms of social media hold the potential for high returns on investment. Twitter is just one of many sites that exist with this potential. Its advantage over the others is that it has one of the widest reaches and takes the least amount of time to generate content. Due to the limit on the number of characters one can use, they have to keep their messages short and succinct. They must catch the attention of potential customers quickly and convince them to follow up by clicking on the link in the post.

Of course, there is one mistake that many businesses make that causes their attempts at using Twitter, or any other social media, as a means of advertising to fail miserably. That mistake is making overt attempts at selling. People are looking for interesting content, not advertising, when they use sites of this type. One can slip in a short sales pitch occasionally, but effort must be made to provide something of value to readers in addition.

Using Twitter to help your business can be one of the best ways to advertise on the internet. However, one must remember that this site was not created to provide free ad space. That is simply a side effect that can be made use of by smart businesses.

Social media has revolutionized the way people use the Internet. How has it done this? People can now rate how valuable information that is provided by a website. With sites like Reddit, Digg and Stumbleupon, there’s less sorting through garbage, since the top rated information is always at the top of the list, unlike the search results of a traditional search engine.

These sites provide news, much like other news sites on the internet. The huge difference is that the users of the site submit the articles they find interesting. Moderators choose the stories that are posted to the front page. Afterward, users are allowed to vote on the stories they like best. Based on the votes, stories are moved up or down in the site rankings.

Many people use these sites because they are able to find relevant information that might be of interest faster. In many ways, these types of sites are becoming more used than search engines by individuals seeking certain information. This is because the votes give them an indicator of the relative value of one article over another when both cover the same topic. In this fashion, social news sites are beginning to gain recognition as intelligent search engines.

One major difference that many people should know about between these sites is how negative votes affect the ratings of stories. For instance, Digg allows users to vote to Digg or bury and article. Enough votes to bury it will get an article killed. Otherwise, the negative votes do not send down voted articles lower in the ranking. Reddit, on the other hand, applies the votes in both directions. Favorable votes get articles ranked higher while negative votes bump them down in the rankings.

In addition to allowing users to vote on the articles to determine their placement on the page, many of these sites allow users to comment on the articles. These comments can develop into a full blown discussion of the information provided in the articles and its relative merits. The comments are often voted on in much the same way as the articles so that more popular comments rise to the top of the comments list.

Social media in general has greatly changed the way people connect on the internet. The evolution of social news sites has impacted the way people gather news about world events and topics of interest to them. Some feature specialized types of information such as news about technology. Others are more general in their offerings.

Using social news sites like Digg, Propeller, and Reddit is impacting how people search for information as well as how they gather it. Because the articles are contributed by other users, many people use these sites to establish themselves as experts in their chosen fields. This contributes greatly to creating a brand for themselves that people can connect with.
Providing interesting content that people find useful helps to build a sense of trust that will help web entrepreneurs succeed in their attempts to drive traffic to their sites.

One huge advantage of social networking sites is the ability to establish and promote a personal brand. Establishing a brand and setting yourself or your company up as an expert in your field is time consuming and cannot be accomplished overnight. It is well worth the effort and time it takes though, as being recognized as an expert greatly enhances your chances of success in your field. Let’s look at how we can use social media to establish your brand.

The first step lies in building an online profile that is interesting. One’s goal should be to establish himself/herself as an expert in his/her chosen field. This can be done through a series of steps such as posting comments on blogs that relate to that field. Making connections with movers and shakers in the field of interest can lead to invitations to guest post on their blogs or websites. Extending the same invitations to them to post one your blog or website can lend their credibility to your brand.

If one does not already have one, creating a blog is one excellent method of establishing a brand. Social media sites can be used to direct traffic to the blog if one takes the proper approach. It is important to remember that social networking sites are created for the purpose of creating friendships and groups that share common interests. Any messages that promote one’s particular brand should not take on a self aggrandizing tone.

Following the posts of other experts in your field can create opportunities for educated discourse. If you disagree with something said in one of these blog posts, state your disagreement in a comment on the blog. Do so with a respectful tone that shows that you recognize that person’s expertise by outlining the reasons for your disagreement without stating that the person is wrong. After all, there are many times when people disagree without either one being completely wrong or right.

Engage in conversations with these experts that are open to public viewing. This is especially important if they are already well known and you are just beginning to create a personal brand.

Make posts on social media sites that tell people about you and your brand in an informative and interesting way. It is important to avoid making these posts sound like advertisements. People become resistant when they feel as if they are being pushed into something.

One thing that many business people fail to do that can prove invaluable when trying to establish a network of connections is searching the internet for content that will be interesting to those whose attention one is trying to attract. Pass this information along, even if it means driving traffic to someone else’s website. If you are seen as a source of valuable information, the information you provide about your personal brand will take on its own value.

Using social media to establish your brand can lead to success at a much faster pace than any other method of getting the message out. It also creates a self perpetuating stream of targeted leads of a quality that one would be hard pressed to find using any other media.

In a world filled with social media sites, Linked In stands apart. Using Linked In for social networking opens up an entire world of contacts that can be used for both personal and business reasons. Like some other sites, this one allows individuals to connect with friends. It also allows one to see the contact lists of all those with whom a connection has been made.

The best part is that one can search for specific individuals or people in certain occupations. Once a name comes up, you can see just how closely connected you are by degrees. A first degree connection is one where you know the contact personally. A second degree connection means that you know someone who knows the person. Third degree equates to friend of a friend of a friend. And the connections continue in an ever widening circle.

This has many advantages when one wants to make a connection with someone in particular for whatever reason. It is especially useful when for businesses who want to connect with other businesses to make a sales pitch or to look into purchasing a product.

The reason for this is that cold calling is one of the worst ways to connect with someone. On the other hand, using one’s network of connections on Linked In, it becomes possible to contact someone you know and ask them to pass a message along the chain to the person you are trying to reach. In many ways, this is similar to the way kids pass notes in school.
The person you are trying to reach is much more likely to be receptive to your message if you are introduced by someone he/she knows and trusts than if you simply call or write them out of the blue.

This site also makes it possible to contact other individuals with whom you share common interests or goals. The principle is the same as making business contacts. These people are much more likely to be receptive to your attempts at making contact if you are introduced by one of their contacts. After a connection is made, you can gain access to that person’s network of connections.

In terms of social media, Linked In is probably one of the least known sites. However, its value as a means of social networking may actually surpass that of other sites, such as Facebook or Twitter. This is because one can use its search function to locate virtually anyone who has a profile page created and reach them through direct or indirect means. This is the purest form of networking and it brings together people to work on assorted projects who might otherwise never even hear of one another.

Using Linked In for social networking can benefit anyone in his/her personal, career, educational, and/or business goals. The key lies in making connections with others of similar mind set or who share some of these goals. Once connections are made, it becomes possible to reach an ever expanding circle through the different layers of contact.

Facebook is the foremost example of a social media service that allows individuals to network directly with others that share similar tastes and interests. It is a site that allows users to create a profile that tells a little bit about themselves and their interests. They are then able to connect over the internet with other users that share similar interests, hobbies, jobs, etc. Still, many wonder, “What is social networking on Facebook?”

Facebook differs from many types of online communities in that it focuses on the individual rather than on the community as a whole. One can locate forums on just about any topic in the world, but their focus is on the community that shares interest in the topic covered. Individuals may post comments on posts made by other authors that will be seen by all users. Facebook allows one to select whether comments will be open to the general public or just to a small group of friends. This is a more individual centered approach than that taken by community forums.

Users may create their own unique networks of friends and/or relatives that may view their profiles and share links or personal data with them. In addition, users may communicate directly through email and/or online chat sessions via the site. The true definition of social networking on Facebook is interacting with this group or groups of friends online through the services offered by the site.

Many businesses have created their own profiles on this site that allow them to reach a larger audience than they might otherwise. The reason for this is that they attract individuals whose stated interests coincide with their content. These individuals have the ability to “Like” such pages, meaning that they place social bookmarks to the pages that are then shared with members of their own personal networks, making the sites more visible than they might be if relying solely on search engine results to get them into the public eye.

A wide range of personal blogs that might not ever achieve widespread readership are brought to the front in the same manner. Individuals find these blogs and become interested in their content.

These people bookmark the blogs and share the links with friends they think might share their interest. This has several benefits for the bloggers, including creating a potential way to make money from writing their own blogs.

Social networking on Facebook takes many different forms. The primary form lies in the creation of individual networks of friends with which one can communicate. Each individual in the network has his/her own network, meaning that information can be shared and expanded exponentially. Friends may communicate with one another easily as well as posting content they wish to share with other members of their network such as social bookmarks and messages about what is currently happening in their lives. Their friends have the ability to comment on their postings publicly or privately.

Being a member of a social network helps individuals gather more news on topics they find relevant than they might be able to do using search engines alone. This means that members of such sites are often more well informed about topics of interest than those who do not participate in such groups.

Because of the internet, it’s possible to gather huge amounts of information quickly. You can utilize search engines to gather this information, but it’s not necessarily the best choice. Social bookmarking is an excellent method of gathering information quickly, but not everyone understands social bookmarking.

I’m sure you have found websites that you thought were useful and have bookmarked it in whatever browser you use. That’s the way that social bookmarking works, except that instead of saving the bookmark to your web browser, you save it to a site on the Internet set up to save your bookmarks. Saving it to a social bookmarking site allows you to share your links with friends and family who might also enjoy the resource.

When you bookmark a site in this fashion, you can create public tags that identify the type of content that other users can expect. There are also websites that gather tags and rank sites based on user comments and tags. Tags can be a more useful and meaningful way to search than search engines when looking for information.

Some of the more well-known social bookmarking sites like digg, reddit, stubleupon, and delicious.com are used widely to bookmark and find information based on tags. As sites that are submitted to these bookmarking sites get more recommendations from their users, they move to the top of listings. So based on user popularity, for any topic there may be numerous listings, some with many recommendations and others with only a few. Obviously, the ones with the most recommendations will be the most useful of the listings.

You can also browse through information using categories on social bookmarking sites. There is often a way to sort the listings by most popular, recently added, or by the niche or type of site that it is, such as technology, sports, news, etc.

While social bookmarking began as a simple way to share links with friends and family, it has grown over the years and has become a very useful way to search for information. People often use these sites to stay current on topics that interest them. It’s easy to follow news and trends just by clicking on the categories that interest you and checking out the listings that will be shown from most popular to least popular.

Social bookmarking sites make finding information easier than searching through page after page of results that are often irrelevant in traditional search engines.

Facebook is the preeminent social networking site on the internet. It is geared toward individuals who create and upload profiles, then interact with other individuals who share similar interests. However, more and more businesses are finding it to be a valuable resource for attracting visitors to their websites. Here, we are going to take a look at using Facebook fan pages for your business.

Businesses are not allowed to create profiles on Facebook. However, they may create what are known as fan pages that function in much the same fashion. Here, they may post information about their company, their products or services, or any other type of content they think visitors to their pages would be interested in. This may include a link to their corporate website, email address, etc.

Today, a large number of businesses include a request that people friend them on Facebook and follow their fan page in their advertising media rather than including their website URL. Of course, the secret to success here is including content on their fan pages that people will find interesting and/or useful. This is a social media outlet where interaction with friends and fans is critical to success. This means that someone will need to monitor the page and interact with fans on a regular basis.

The advantage is that this interaction on a social level makes a brand seem more friendly and accessible. This tends to make more people Like their page, leading to more traffic to their website. It provides many opportunities for companies to reach targeted prospects that have already shown interest in the product and/or service offered by the business.

One thing that one must be aware of is that only official representatives of a given business are allowed to create fan pages. Steps will be taken by Facebook to ensure the identity of the representative before any pages will be published.
One of the most successful methods being used by businesses is allowing fans to post content on their wall. Comments can be moderated by the page administrator to ensure that content is kept to acceptable standards. In addition, many businesses find that allowing users to post photos to their fan pages creates a sense of good will and encourages fans to share this page with their friends.

One good example of this is Graco. This company manufactures a range of products for infants. They post photos of their products on their fan pages. They also allow users to post photos of their babies using the Graco products to their pages. This generates a large amount of content that users will find interesting and worth sharing.

While Facebook does not support sending private messages to individual users, one can post content and make it viewable to only certain groups of fans based on interests or locations. This allows them to offer unique specials to targeted groups so that they can track the success of their marketing success using this form of social media. Using Facebook fan pages for your business is one form of advertising that is free, yet incredibly valuable.
